The community came together in downtown Philadelphia to establish a living classroom for the Greenfield School.
Philadelphia, PA — The cool temperatures and bright sunshine were a perfect backdrop for the kick off of CSX's "Trees for Tracks" initative. On Saturday, September 26, over 70 volunteers from CSX, City Year, the Alliance for Community Trees and its partners, the local community and Greening Greenfield came together in downtown Philadelphia to establish a living classroom for the Greenfield School. Without a hitch, the participants gathered at 8am where we were welcomed by CSX and warmed up with light exercises. We divided into teams and learned the proper tree-planting technique from Greening Greenfield Tree Tenders. For the next several hours, we went to work digging holes, measuring the space needed for a carefully selected tree to take root, stomping the dirt, hoisting a variety of trees into the holes, and back-filling, mulching, and watering. Not only did the trees seem to put a smile on the school's new playground, but the success of the day brought smiles to everyone's faces, knowing that we had contributed to "greening" our world and we had done it as a community – working together.
