In February 2007, a four-car train collision occurred along CSX tracks in the state of Alabama, resulting in six fatalities. In response to this pressing issue, CSX, in conjunction with Norfolk Southern and Operation Lifesaver, hosted the first ever Alabama Rail Safety Summit in March of the same year.

Rail industry executives, government officials, police officers and the Department of Transportation were invited to participate to discuss potential solutions to the problem.

As a result of the meeting, CSX implemented a three-tiered campaign, starting with an on-site sponsorship at Talladega Superspeedway, a 5-month Safety Campaign utilizing billboards and radio stations throughout the state and an event at Auburn University during the school's homecoming weekend. In addition, a second Safety Summit was held in August to discuss the campaign's effectiveness and the results of the Talladega sponsorship.
