Manville, NJ — CSX, Norfolk Southern and Operation Lifesaver recently partnered in a cross functional effort designed to educate community officials about train safety. Passengers boarded the Norfolk Southern Operation Lifesaver train in Manville for a 2 hour round-trip ride to Oak Island, NJ and back.
Tarah Harkins, CSX Community Affairs and Safety Officer, was on hand to answer questions and present information to local government, law enforcement professionals, state transportation personnel, and Federal Railroad employees.
Each passenger was given a pamphlet with maps, listing of crossings with incident history, and historical details about the various railroads that operate in the area. While the train proceeded, passengers could watch as it approached crossings through televisions connected to cameras on the locomotive.
Said Harkins after an informative day, "Everyone had a fantastic time, learned a lot and came away with new found respect for trains and the appropriate way to approach grade crossings."
