CSX Transportation reinforced its ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship with a recent $2,500 grant to a Newport News-based land conservancy.

Miami, FL —

More than 100 volunteers from CSX braved torrential rains and unseasonably cold South Florida temperatures to join forces with the Alliance for Community Trees (ACT), TREEmendous Miami, City Year and students and teachers from the Maritime and Science Technology (MAST) Academy on January 9 to plant more than 200 trees in an effort to restore native species on Virginia Key.

Avon, IN —

CSXT is the first railroad in Indiana to utilize GenSet locomotives, which can reduce nitrous oxide and particulate matter emissions by 80 percent and carbon dioxide emissions by up to 50 percent and switch to a “sleep” mode after a period of inactivity.

Baltimore, MD —

CSX employees, joined by representatives from the City’s TreeBaltimore Program, Parks & People Foundation and the Westport Community, spent the morning of Saturday, October 10, planting 50 large Redbud, Maple and Sycamore trees throughout the Westport Neighborhood of Baltimore.

CSX will soon kick-off a monumental initiative – the planting of one tree for every mile of the 21,000 miles of track across its vast network.

CSX recently unveiled four ultra-low emission GenSet locomotives, just hours after becoming the first major transportation provider to announce a voluntary emissions reduction plan.

St. Pauls, NC —

The wish list included hollies and daylilies, crape myrtles and knockout roses. Now, the small North Carolina town of St. Pauls is getting greener – with a big help from CSX.

Clean sweeps, community activism, electronics recycling and sustainability were all part of "Celebrating Earth Day at CSX," held April 15–April 24 system wide.

CSX's Michael E. O'Malley, assistant chief engineer-facilities, received the railroad industry's most prestigious environmental award, the John H. Chafee Environmental Excellence Award, which is presented annually by the Association of American Railroads. He was one of five railroaders nominated.

Indianapolis, IN —
