Anacostia Park, Washington, DC — CSX employees from Washington, DC; Baltimore, Maryland; and even Philadelphia, Pennsylvania joined City Year Corps members to participate in the first CSX-City Year Service Day of 2008.
Anacostia Park includes more than 1200 acres of land and is currently managed by the National Park Service. In 2003, Hurricane Isabel ravaged much of the mid-Atlantic and destroyed a large number of shade trees in Anacostia Park.
For the Service Day, CSX employees teamed with City Year Corps members to plant new trees in two key picnic areas of the park.
The day kicked off at 8:30AM with an opening ceremony and ended shortly after a delicious boxed lunch. All volunteers received a special Keep on Giving Service Day Kit, which included a cinch sak, cap, t-shirt and care packet of sunscreen, a rain poncho (which came in handy that day!) and insect repellent.
The volunteers had a great time making new friends and giving back to the community.
