Giving

Through grass-roots volunteerism and focused corporate giving, CSX is committed to strengthening the bond between our company and the citizens of the towns in which we live and work.

City Year

CSX participates in the City Year mission by serving as a strategic partner, team sponsor and national leadership sponsor. Support for City Year provides countless opportunities in schools and neighborhoods across the country to:

  • Help children succeed
  • Build stronger communities
  • Breakdown social barriers
  • Develop young leaders
  • Foster active citizenship

Four key City Year programs to which CSX devotes time and resources include:

CSX-City Year Service Days

CSX works with City Year's Care Force to directly support the communities in which CSX operates, by hosting Service Day events throughout the year. Service Days involve City Year corps members and CSX employees and vendor partners coming together for one day to provide an improvement service for a neighborhood, school or other organization within a CSX community. Recent projects have included planting trees, building outdoor classrooms and installing fitness tracks and equipment.

To take part in an upcoming CSX-City Year Service Day event, please visit the calendar of events. Or, view a video to check out the CSX-City Year team in action.

Sponsored Sites

CSX funds 12 City Year teams, each of which is made up of corps members who go into the schools in their assigned cities to mentor, teach and tutor. The techniques they are trained to use come from the Whole School/Whole Child method, designed to keep kids in school, increase high school graduation rates and make connections that build communities and keep them safe.

This year's CSX sponsored teams:

  • Civic Engagement Team, Washington, DC
  • Service Days Team, Boston, MA
  • Myrtle Grove Elementary School, Miami, FL
  • Reavis Elementary, Chicago, IL
  • George Washington Carver High School, New Orleans, LA
  • Hennigan Elementary School, Jamaica Plain, MA
  • Roberto Clemente Academy, Detroit, MI
  • PS 333/335, Bronx, NY
  • Collinwood High School, Cleveland, OH
  • Linden STEM Academy, Columbus, OH

Safety Training and Education

With support from Emergency University, CSX provides CPR and first aid training to all City Year Corps members. CSX's safety department also provides all corps members with a "Safety Tip of the Day." All City Year corps members also carry laminated cards with information about National Safe Place, another organization that CSX sponsors nationally.

Safety Ambassador Program

In each of City Year's 17 cities, one corps member has been designated as the Safety Ambassador and takes personal responsibility by conducting safety audits and assuring safe practices in all City Year facilities and at all activities. In gratitude for their leadership in fostering CSX's commitment to safety, CSX provides each Safety Ambassador with a $1,000 scholarship.

In addition, CSX has donated two Care Force® trailers to transport City Year's Care Force® staff and equipment safely and promptly to service events across the country. These "mobile tool sheds" leverage CSX's business strength - transporting goods safely – with City Year's goal of being fully prepared to deliver a quality service day to communities in need.
